Velas to host first annual Women’s Day Ride this weekend

Velas, a Lawrence-based “sisterhood of cyclists,” will host its first annual Women’s Day Ride this Sunday at Broken Arrow Park, 2800 Louisiana St.

The event, which kicks off at 7:30 a.m. that day, will benefit local women’s charities, including One Hundred Good Women, The Sexual Trauma and Abuse Care Center, and the Willow Domestic Violence Center.

Aimed at encouraging more women of all skill levels to hop on a bike, the day will offer 16-mile, 30-mile and 50-mile routes. Each route will offer support and gear and sweepers, as well as ride ambassadors for accompaniment and light mechanical issues. A celebration with music and a light lunch will be held after returning to Broken Arrow Park.

Those interested can register online at www.wearevelas.com; same-day registration is also available, with a late fee. Sunflower Outdoor and Bike Shop is offering free safety checks and quick lube for all registered participants between now and the day of the ride.
