Lawrence school board to review state assessment results

The Lawrence school board Monday will review the district’s results of the first state assessments under the new Common Core education standards.

The report on the 2014-2015 Kansas Assessment Program results will be presented at the school board meeting Monday evening. The report includes results from tests given in English, math, science and history/government/social studies across various grade levels.

Student performance is categorized within one of four levels: Level 1, below grade level expectations; Level 2, at grade level but not yet on track for college or career readiness; Level 3, at grade level and on track for college or career readiness; and Level 4, exceeds grade level expectations and on track for college or career readiness.

In September, statewide scores in reading and math tests were released, showing that most Kansas students are performing at or above grade level but few are on track to be ready for college or careers by the time they graduate from high school.

Terry McEwen, director of curriculum, instruction and assessment for the school district, will present the report on the district’s test results to the school board.

In other business, the school board will vote on whether to approve revisions to elementary and middle school schedules for the next two school-year calendars to account for the addition of two professional development days.

Board members will also vote on whether to approve construction bids for Schwegler and Deerfield elementary schools.

The school board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the district offices, 110 McDonald Drive.
