Hugoton stops Baldwin girls for title

? Hugoton’s quickness proved to be the difference Saturday in the 4A Division II state girls basketball championship game.

Hugoton sophomore guard Amy Scott had 25 points, and freshman point guard Dallie Hoskinson added 22 points, going 5-for-9 from the field and 11-for-12 from the line, as the Eagles downed Baldwin, 68-54.

With a short, quick lineup that featured no one taller than 5-foot-9, Hugoton was able to negate Baldwin’s full-court pressure, a weapon that forced 38 turnovers and set up numerous layups in the Bulldogs’ first two state tournament games.

“I knew that going in they were quick,” Baldwin coach Bob Martin said. “We decided we had to do what we do best against what they do best. They were a little better tonight.”

It was the Bulldogs who were careless with the ball early against the Eagles’ match-up zone, making eight first-quarter miscues. Baldwin was able to right that problem the remainder of the game, but the early turnovers prevented the team from taking advantage of center Alexia Stein’s presence in the first quarter.

The 6-1 senior finished with 14 points. Senior Maddie Ogle was effective inside and outside, scoring a team-high 22-points for the Bulldogs and finishing the three-game state tournament with 60 points.

Also hurting the Bulldogs was early foul trouble. Starting junior guard Madeline Neufeld and reserve Abby Ogle both picked up two first-quarter fouls and sat much of the game before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Despite the early fouls and miscues, Baldwin was even with the Eagles at 17-17 at the end of the first eight minutes.

Hugoton first got away from the Bulldogs midway through the second quarter at 31-19, when Hoskinson converted a conventional three-point play after sophomore Kathryn Heger made two of her three treys on the night.

Baldwin scored the game’s next seven points with a trey from sophomore Taylor Cawley, a basket inside from Stein and a steal and layup from Abby Ogle, but Hugoton scored the last four points of the half, taking a 35-26 at the break.

Baldwin finished with a 21-4 record. Hugoton was 22-2.
