Off the Beaten Plate: Dulce de leche chimichanga at Tres Mexicanos

You’re likely to find a chimichanga — basically a deep-fried burrito — at almost any Mexican restaurant in town. What’s a little more off the beaten plate (ahem) is Tres Mexicanos’ sweet reworking of the Tex-Mex favorite, which in this case involves dulce de leche. So, yum.

Dulce de leche is, at its most basic form, sweetened milk that’s been slowly simmered until it reaches caramelized heaven. So, while it’s not technically the same kind of caramel we might drizzle over sundaes or find in a Russell Stover box, the dairy-based treat resembles it quite a bit in taste, texture and appearance.

At Tres Mexicanos, flour tortillas are stuffed with rich, caramel-y dulce de leche, deep-fried and then cut into gooey-on-the-inside, crunchy-on-the-outside little morsels.

It’s served with vanilla ice cream and a liberal dusting of rainbow sprinkles.
