Task force reviewing KU sexual assault policies to meet

A Kansas University task force charged with reviewing the school’s policies on sexual assault will meet for the first time Friday.

The meeting will be at 9 a.m. in the Regents Room, 230 in Strong Hall. The meeting is open to the public.

KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little announced the creation of the task force two weeks ago in the face of increasing criticism of the school’s policies on investigating allegations of sexual assault.

“Our university has a responsibility to create an environment where every member of our community feels safe,” Gray-Little said at the time.

The task force is co-chaired by Angela Murphy, a student in the English Department, and Alesha Doan, chair of the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies and associate professor of political science. The task force includes other students, faculty and administrators.

The task force is charged with:

— Soliciting input from individuals who have been through the sexual assault and harassment investigation process, and recommending changes to improve the process;

— Examining prevention practices and recommending ways to make them more effective;

— Evaluating the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities and recommending revisions;

— Determining the best way to support and advocate for student crime victims.
