Manning off to hot start at Wake Forest

Danny Manning

Danny Manning’s initial Wake Forest team (2-0) thrashed Tulane, 71-49, on Monday in New Orleans.

It was the most lopsided road win by a Wake team since a 95-54 victory over East Carolina on Dec. 22, 2008. Wake won six road games in Jeff Bzdelik’s four seasons at Wake. He was 2-30 in ACC road games.

“If the Deacons continue to play defense the way they did in last night’s rout at Tulane then they might finally be waking up from the nightmare of the past four seasons,” wrote Dan Collins of the Winston-Salem Journal.

Manning, a former KU assistant who also is the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, is in his first season as the head coach at Wake Forest. He landed at Wake after spending two years leading the program at Tulsa, which included a trip to the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
