40 years ago: City approves development of drainage ditch

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 29, 1974:

  • The Lawrence City Commission this week gave initial approval to spending $56,472 to allow development of a drainage ditch owned by Chuck Belote, 2019 Harvard, and City Commissioner John Emick. The sum was the 71 percent city share of installing large storm sewer pipes in the ditch, which extended north of Sixth Street at Arkansas and turned east to meet Maine. Commissioners had stressed the long-standing city policy to pay for storm sewers, but representatives of several groups showed up to protest, among them the League of Women Voters, who said, “We do not feel that the public benefits of the project justify the expense that would be involved for the city.”
  • The 37th annual American Legion Boys’ State was to convene at Kansas University next week, followed June 9-16 by Sunflower Girls’ State. Delegates to both sessions were high school students who had just completed their junior year. A total of 1,016 boys and 410 girls were expected to participate in the sessions, which were sponsored by the Legion and its Auxiliary.
  • The drama “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” was named outstanding television special of 1973, and its star, Cicely Tyson, actress of the year for specials, at the 28th Emmy Awards.
