One killed, seven hospitalized in two-vehicle Jefferson County accident

A 71-year-old woman was killed and seven people — including three children between the ages of 1 and 9 — were hospitalized from a two-vehicle accident in Jefferson County Sunday afternoon.

Margaret L. Schuler, of Nortonville, died as a result of the crash, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

She was the lone passenger of a Toyota Camry, driven by Don Schuler, 71 of Nortonville, that was going southbound on Osage Road near Nortonville, the report said. At about 4:30 p.m., that vehicle failed to yield at a stop sign at the Kansas Highway 4 intersection, where the accident occurred with a Buick Park Avenue, driven by Alyissa Berglund, 15 of Atchison, according to the report.

All seven surviving occupants were transported to Stormont-Vail Healthcare in Topeka. The report lists the other occupants of the Buick Park Avenue as: Mary Wilks, 17, of Topeka; Debbie Russell, 36, of Topeka; Benjamin Forbes, 4, of Atchison; Amber Forbes, 9, of Atchison; Evan Forbes, 1, of Atchison.

Stormont-Vail said as of late Sunday evening that Berglund, Benjamin Forbes, Evan Forbes and Don Schuler have been discharged, while the rest continue to be evaluated.
