Four KU juniors finalists for Truman scholarships

All four Kansas University juniors nominated for the national Harry S. Truman Scholarships in February have made it to the final selection round.

The KU students will interview with a regional review panel on April 7 in Kansas City, Mo. They are among 204 total finalists, picked from 655 candidates from schools throughout the U.S.

Created in 1975, the scholarships provide $30,000 in graduate school support for college juniors planning to enter public service. Seventeen KU students have won the scholarships since 1981, the university said.

This year’s nominees from KU are:

• Emma Halling, from Elkhart, Ind., a junior in American studies and women, gender and sexuality studies

• Virginia Helgeson, from Olathe, a junior in social welfare and religious studies

• Leigh Loving, from McPherson, a junior in genetics

• Micah Melia, from Prairie Village, a junior in anthropology
