25 years ago: Pinckney parents object to new location of specialized room

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 24, 1987:

About 20 Pinckney School parents had voiced their concerns at a recent Lawrence school board meeting after the school had announced plans to move students with hearing impairments to another room for the 1987-88 school year. There were to be nine students with hearing impairments at Pinckney in the upcoming year, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. A representative of the parents explained to the board that the new room, in which the children received instruction for part of the day, was in a louder part of the building and would cause distractions for children who were unable to screen out distracting noises. The response of the board was that the old specialized room was needed for a full class due to space constrictions and that, due to the current construction of a new elementary school in the district, this and other results of recent overcrowding were expected to be for one year only.
