25 years ago: Lawrence hopes to host Junior Olympics

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 17, 1987:

The city of Lawrence was expecting to host about 5,000 young athletes next summer for the 1988 Amateur Athletic Union/Junior Olympics. A contract solidifying the details was in the final stages, said Judy Billings of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, who had been working for about a year to bring the event to the area. Wayne Bly, AAU/Junior Olympics Region 8 Director, said that AAU officials at national headquarters in Indianapolis were expected to announce their decision soon. The event, which included competition in 16 sports including track and field, swimming, basketball, and other Olympic events would take place at Kansas University sports facilities.
