Aquahawks openings: The Lawrence Aquahawks swimming team is always accepting new members. The Aquahawks are a year-round USA Swimming-sponsored competitive swim team. The Aquahawks offer a swim lesson program and competitive swim team for all ages. The Aquahawks are coached by professional coaches with weekly practices geared toward a variety of skill levels. FUNdamental Softball: Learn the proper mechanics and techniques to playing softball. Henrickson tourney: The eighth annual Bonnie Henrickson Golf Tournament will be Aug. 25 at Alvamar Country Club. Registration for the event is available for singles, pairs and foursomes. All proceeds from the tournament will go to Kansas University women’s basketball and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Breast Center. The event includes a four-person scramble at 1 p.m., followed by a dinner and live and silent auctions at 6 p.m. Prizes will also be awarded for best four-women team, best four-man team, best four-person mixed team, longest drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one. Free State fall softball camp: The 5 Tool Softball School (grades 4 through 8) is taking registration for the camp that will be offered at Free State High School this fall. Nine-hole golf tournament: A nine-hole golf event hosted by the Lawrence Police Foundations will be held Aug. 23 at the Orchards Golf Course. Registration and a putting/chipping contest will be held at 4:30 p.m., a shotgun scramble at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $54 per person, $108 for two-person teams. MS bike ride coming: The Kansas City and Topeka annual Bike MS rides will converge on Lawrence. On. Sept 22, 2,000 cyclists are expected to start at either Garmin’s headquarters in Olathe or Shawnee Heights Middle School in Topeka and ride to an overnight in Lawrence, then a ride to Olathe on Sept. 23. There also will be a shuttle from Lawrence to Olathe for Saturday-only riders. Designed for riders of all skill levels, the ride has several route options: 37, 75, 101 and 150 miles. The stop in Lawrence’s South Park will include a festival open to riders and the public with music, food and drink, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the MS Society. Hoops clinic: The KAN Do Hoops Back to School Basics, a clinic for boys and girls in grades 4 thru 8, will be held Aug. 27-30. It will focus on making each player a better dribbler and shooter with better overall awareness of how to outplay their opponent in the workouts. Ad Astra Area Aquatics: Ad Astra Area Aquatics, a year-round swim club, will be conducting a “New Swimmer Clinic” from 6-7 p.m. Aug. 20, 21, and 22 at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center. Please wear a swim suit and bring goggles and a towel. Coaches will give each swimmer an opportunity to swim and receive instruction while parents learn about the program. Trail races: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host Hawk 100, 50 and 26.2-mile trail races Sept. 8-9 on the North Shore Trails at Clinton Lake. The “Hawk Hundred” 100-Mile Trail Run features four 25-mile loops on Clinton Lake’s wooded, rocky, root-bound North Shore trail system. The “Hawk 50” runners will complete two laps of the 25-mile course, while the runners in the 26.2-mile Hawk marathon “fun run” will add an extra 1.2 miles off-trail to the beginning of their one-lap race. The races begin and end at Shelter 1 in the Army Corps of Engineers’ Overlook Park section of Clinton Lake State Park. Girls intramural volleyball: Lawrence Parks and Recreation and USD 497 are taking registrations for girls intramural middle school volleyball for sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Participation fee is $55, and the deadline Thursday Aug. 30. Sayers golf tournament: The 18th Annual Gale Sayers Golf Tournament, benefiting the Kansas University School of Education, will be held Friday, Sept. 14, at Alvamar Golf Course. Registration for the four-person scramble begins at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. A casual lunch, awards ceremony and silent auction will follow. Family Promise golf tournament: KU All-American Wayne Simien and Cindy Self, wife of KU coach Bill Self, are once again the co-chairs of the Family Promise Golf Tournament and Auction Party. The Auction Party at Maceli’s Sunday evening Sept. 9 will feature hot food and complimentary wine and beer and soft drinks. Bidders will vie for both silent and live auction items ranging in value from $25 gift certificates to a week’s vacation in a private oceanside condo in Florida. On Monday, Sept. 10, four-person teams will compete in two flights for a variety of individual and team prizes at Alvamar CC in a scramble format. Registration fees include lunch, golf and cart, dinner and beverages both on and off the course, plus two admissions to the Auction Party. Special rules ensure that all players will finish their rounds in 4 1/2 hours. Registration starts at noon, box lunches follow, shotgun start at 1 p.m., a barbecue buffet dinner with awards at 5:30.
