25 years ago: Fire destroys shack used by homeless people

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 2, 1987:

  • An abandoned building used by five or six homeless individuals had been destroyed by fire on a recent night. Firefighters had attempted to put out the blaze at the shed, which was located among the trees along the Kansas River, but they were hampered in their efforts when a train rolled over and cut a water hose that they had laid across the nearby Santa Fe tracks. Officials investigating the fire said that they were relatively certain no one had been trapped inside the small building.
  • Doris “Faye” McAfee was to begin her duties this week as administrator of the Valleyview Care Home, a job that she called a challenge. The 61-bed county-owned nursing home on Ridge Court had suffered some criticism by nursing home advocates and staff, some of which had involved the inefficient layout of the interior. Another issue, according to McAfee, was the cost. The operation of Valleyview was costing Douglas County about $300,000 a year in addition to state Medicaid payments and private fees paid by patients.
