Lecompton elects council members

Lecompton residents elected three City Council members Tuesday.

The unofficial results as of Tuesday night (they have to be confirmed by the county board of canvassers on Monday) show incumbent Jimmy Wilkins in a tie for first place in number of votes at 58. Mary Jane Hoffer, a write-in candidate, also won 58 votes. Loretta Susie Hackathorn, also a write-in, came in third with 42 votes. Jennifer Smith and Christy Mallonee, with 24 votes each, were the two other incumbents and the only other two on the official ballot. Smith and Mallonee both resigned from the council on March 19 amid controversy over what to do with the currently empty Lecompton High School and their treatment by other council members.

Eighty-six votes were cast, which is 22 percent of the population, according to Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew.

Other write-in candidates and their votes:

• Danny Sanford — 3

• James Goodrick — 2

• Lyle Fergus — 1

• B. Hastert — 1

• Gary L. Bohannan — 1

• Earl Sanford — 1

• Amber Nickel — 1

• Harold Willams — 1.
