25 years ago: Heavy rainfall drenching NE Kansas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 26, 1986:

Fall-semester enrollment at Kansas University had exceeded the predictions of university officials, topping the record set the previous fall by more than 1,100 students. The latest count showed 28,259 students enrolled at Lawrence, the KU Medical Center, and in KU off-campus programs, prompting pleas from administrators for extra state funds.

Heavy rains had hit the Kansas City area and portions of eastern Kansas for the third time in a week, with strong winds damaging a shopping center and a synagogue in the southern part of Kansas City. The weather had been less violent in Lawrence, but rainfall totals were continuing to add up, with more than 4.43 inches having fallen on the city in the past 48 hours.
