National briefs: Ventura new ChiSox skipper

Chicago — Former All-Star third baseman Robin Ventura is replacing the fiery Ozzie Guillen as manager of the Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox say Ventura agreed to a multiyear deal Thursday.

A longtime star with the White Sox, Ventura was hired by the club last June as a special adviser to director of player development Buddy Bell. Ventura is the 38th White Sox manager overall, including 17 who played for the team.

ESPN drops Williams’ song

Bristol, Conn. — Are you ready for some football? Hank Williams Jr. isn’t anymore.

The country singer and ESPN each took credit for the decision Thursday morning to ax his classic intro to “Monday Night Football.”

The network had pulled the song from the game earlier this week after Williams made an analogy to Adolf Hitler while discussing President Barack Obama on Fox News on Monday morning.

QB Henne out for season

Miami — Another loss for the winless Miami Dolphins: Quarterback Chad Henne is out for the season.

Henne decided to have shoulder surgery and was placed on the injured reserve list Thursday. The Dolphins replaced him on the roster by signing veteran quarterback Sage Rosenfels.

Woods returns, struggles

San Martin, Calif. — Tiger Woods returned from a seven-week break and not much has changed.

Woods went 13 holes between his two birdies Thursday in the Frys.com Open and had to work hard for a 2-over 73.

Texas Open winner Brendan Steele was among three players tied for lead at 4-under 67.
