25 years ago: New KU Catholic campus center nears completion

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 29, 1986:

The Rev. Vince Krische was “breathing a sigh of relief” as the $2.9 million St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center expansion project neared its scheduled completion date. The center, on the southeast corner of Crescent and Engel Roads, was intended primarily to serve Kansas University staff and students. Disagreement about the project lingered, however, as some neighbors still raised objections about anticipated parking and traffic problems as well as the building itself, which one neighborhood resident said looked “very much out of place for a residential area.” Several other neighbors, however, said that they were pleased at the changes officials had made to the original project, including decreasing the planned size of the project and adding a stone wall to hide the parking lot. Fr. Krische, for his part, said that the building was meeting his expectations. “We wanted a warm and inviting building,” he said. “We wanted a building that would last a hundred years. I think we’ll have that.”
