Home sales in Lawrence slow in August; this year still looking better than last

Home sales in Lawrence continue to rebound in 2010, although activity in August slowed significantly, according to a new report.

Home sales in Lawrence are up nearly 9 percent from 2009 levels, according to the latest report from the Lawrence Board of Realtors. Through August, 938 home sales have been recorded, up from 861 during the same period in 2009. The totals, though, are still below the 999 sales made in first eight months of 2008.

The median sales price for homes sold in 2010 was $157,500, up from $153,500 in 2009. The number of days a homes stays on the market is down slightly to 39 days in 2010, compared with 44 a year earlier.

Sales numbers in August were down about 17 percent from August 2009. They totaled 81 for the month. Real estate leaders said the late summer downturn was expected because many people rushed to have their homes sales close earlier in the summer to take advantage of federal tax credits that were being offered at the time.
