25 years ago: KU to upgrade data processing systems

Computer purchases at the University of Kansas were part of a long-range plan to upgrade the data processing systems. Recent bid specifications called for a VAX computer made by Digital Equipment Corp. or a VAX equivalent, and an International Business Machines Corp. system or its equivalent. The lowest bid received for a VAX 8600 was $684,342.

Audio-Reader Network director Rosie Hurwitz cited problems with radio reading services in the U.S. as the population in need of those services increases. Citing the limited availability of sub-channels for broadcasting, Mrs. Hurwitz said that “unless some other method is found, I predict there won’t be many radio reading services left in the next five to 10 years.”

Workers at the municipal swimming pool finished filling the pool to its capacity of half a million gallons of water in preparation for its Memorial Day weekend opening. Swimmers aged 13 to 59 were to be charged $1 for admission, while older and younger swimmers would pay fifty cents.
