Suns take 2-0 series edge

Steve Nash and Jason Richardson scored 19 apiece, and Grant Hill added 18 in a grind-it-out game played at the Spurs’ pace until the Suns started hitting three-pointers. After starting 1-of-7 from long range, Phoenix made eight of its next 12.

Tim Duncan had 29 points and 10 rebounds, and Richard Jefferson rebounded from a poor Game 1 with 18 points and 10 boards for San Antonio. Tony Parker added 20 points for the Spurs.

The best-of-seven series shifts to San Antonio on Friday night.

Manu Ginobili, guarded mainly by Hill, was 2-of-8 from the field, including just 1-of-2 in the second half, but had 11 assists for San Antonio. The Spurs outshot Phoenix 51 percent to 42 percentBut the Suns outrebounded taller San Antonio 49-37.

ISU signs prep forward

Ames, Iowa — Iowa State basketball coach Fred Hoiberg says prep forward Calvin Godfrey has signed to play for the Cyclones.

Godfrey, who is from Robbinsdale, Minn., is 6-foot-8 and 240 pounds. He averaged 18.6 points and nearly 11 rebounds a game last season.

Hofstra promotes aide

Hempstead, N.Y. — Hofstra has promoted assistant Mo Cassara to head coach just two days after Tim Welsh resigned following his DWI arrest. Welsh resigned a month after he was hired to succeed Tom Pecora, who left for Fordham. Welsh hired a staff that included Cassara, who spent the last four years as an assistant coach at Boston College.

Tebow jersey leads league

New York — Tim Tebow already leads the NFL in one category: jersey sales. His Denver Broncos No. 15 was by far the most popular on the NFL’s website for April. His celebrity clearly trumps the debate over whether he’ll ever make it as an NFL quarterback after winning the Heisman Trophy at Florida.

April’s No. 2 seller is an old quarterback on a new team: the Washington Redskins jersey of Donovan McNabb. And jumping into the rankings at No. 12 is his replacement with the Philadelphia Eagles, Kevin Kolb.

Wizards fall to D.C. United

Washington — Danny Allsopp scored twice in the first half to help D.C. United win for the first time this season, 2-1 over the Kansas City Wizards on Wednesday night. Allsopp, acquired as a free agent during the offseason, became the first Australian to score in MLS history. Kansas City has lost four straight.

Bryant on defensive team

New York — Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers is on the NBA all-defensive first team for the fifth straight year. Boston guard Rajon Rondo made the first team for the first time, earning the second-most points behind the league’s defensive player of the year, Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard. Charlotte forward Gerald Wallace also made the team for the first time, with Cleveland’s LeBron James making it for the second straight year.

Wade’s wife sues girlfriend

Miami — The estranged wife of Dwyane Wade has filed suit against his actress girlfriend Gabrielle Union, saying their relationship has caused the NBA All-Star’s two sons emotional distress. Siohvaughn Wade filed the suit in Chicago this week.
