Senior Services seeks snow shovelers

Douglas County Senior Services needs committed volunteers to shovel snow! Volunteers will be matched with a senior resident, and will need to commit to shoveling that person’s driveway and sidewalk through March as necessary. For more information or to sign up to help, call Matthew at 842-0543.

Immediate needs

• Make MLK Day a day on, not a day off! On Sunday, Jan. 17, the Roger Hill Volunteer Center will host the second annual MLK Speak Out from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt. Community members are invited to read a speech, poem, or story inspired by King’s message of peace, equality, and service. On Monday, Jan. 18, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, the Roger Hill center will have several opportunities to volunteer throughout the community. • Lawrence Community Shelter, 214 W. 10th St., needs two adult volunteers per evening, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., to help serve the evening meals until Jan. 22. Volunteers need to come to the shelter at 7:30 p.m. the first night they work to fill out a small amount of paperwork and have a brief orientation. Volunteers may work as many evenings as they want. • Headquarters Counseling Center will have informational meetings for interested volunteers from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Jan. 13 at The Community Mercantile, 901 Iowa, and 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Lawrence Public Library Gallery Room.
