Ailing Seabury hoops team regional-bound

Seabury Academy boys basketball coach Mike Harding had hoped to enter the postseason with his team in peak physical condition.

Instead, he has found himself with a handful of players — including standout Reed Grabill — suffering from the flu.

“Reed Grabill was real weak at practice,” Harding said Wednesday. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen him miss as many lay-ups as he did there. But with today, and we didn’t practice hard yesterday, hopefully we’ll have him back at full strength by tomorrow evening.”

A healthy Grabill — who, along with Bill Gibbs and Skyler Malone, has established himself as one of the team’s top offensive players — likely will be key in today’s 6 p.m. regional matchup with Wetmore in Elwood.

The Seahawks (11-4) topped Wetmore earlier this year, 58-45, but Harding called it his team’s most physical game of the season and said Wednesday it will take 32 minutes of focused basketball to pull off a victory.

“They’re pretty strong and burly, just not as tall as we are,” Harding said. “They ran a little gimmick zone at us. They kept somebody on Bill Gibbs at all times, and I think they’ll do that again. They’ll dare somebody else to beat them.

“So Bill’s got to do his thing, and everybody else has got to step up.”

A victory will ensure Seabury its second straight sub-state berth in two seasons under Harding.

A loss, and a promising season will come to an end for the Seahawks.

“You always have that revenge factor,” Harding said. “But I think if we go down there with the mind-set of taking care of business, we should be all right.”
