Matthew Baldwin

Age: 24.

Sign: Virgo.

Occupation: Grad student in KU’s psychology department.

Hometown: San Antonio, sort of. I was a military kid.

Time in Lawrence? 1 year.

How would you describe your style? My style is comfortable and practical – it is pseudo-hipster, but more sophisticated and long-lasting.

What are your favorite fashion trends? V-neck shirts, soft fabrics, pearl snaps, beards and fitted jeans (Levi’s low-tapered fit is my favorite). I’m not a fan of restrictive, impractical fashion.

What are your least-favorite fashion trends? The “bump-it” hair piece. If you’re using plastic hair-shaping devices to create an illusion, it’s not OK. I don’t approve of any elaborate clothing or accessories that are distracting rather than complementary.

What would you like to see more of in Lawrence? More environment-appropriate dress that still maintains a level of style and individuality.

What would you like to see less of in Lawrence? Less Sperry Top-Siders, big belt buckles and fake non-prescription glasses; less dreadlocks that are nasty – more dreads like Marty’s from local band Cowboy Indian Bear.

Do you have any fashion influences? The fashion and lifestyle promoted by indie acoustic or indie folk rock bands. Basically, anything but clothing that is synonymous with Zach Braff’s wallpaper-patterned shirt in “Garden State.”

People say I look like: Magnum P.I. or Burt Reynolds, especially when I have shaggy hair and a mustache. But right now people just say I look like every other brown-haired, bearded man in Lawrence.

Tell us a secret: When I was in second grade, I was in a commercial with Michael Jordan for Ballpark Franks. My mom dressed me in yellow shorts, a weave belt and a white-and-yellow striped polo shirt.
