Killer targeted at resentencing trial

? The father of a 20-year-old southeast Kansas woman slain in 1996 tried to attack the man convicted of killing her.

Gary Kleypas was in Wyandotte County District Court on Monday morning for resentencing in the beating and stabbing death of Pittsburg State University student Carrie Williams. A jury seated last week will decide whether Kleypas gets life in prison or the death penalty.

A change of venue request was granted and the trial was moved out of Crawford County.

After testimony from one witness, the victim’s father, Larry Williams, lunged at Kleypas. Williams was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs.

Kleypas was convicted of killing Williams in 1997 and sentenced to death.

The Kansas Supreme Court later threw out the death sentence because of juror instruction error and sent the case back to district court.
