University Bridge Club announces results of its May 3 meeting. Hosts were Rhetta Jo Noever, Bonnie Haney, and Al and Carol Smith. Blue winners were Paul Jordan, first; Al Smith, second; Alice Akin, third; Darlene Schneider, fourth; and Ruth Harwood, fifth. Pink winners were Gladis Dight, first; Gini Wigington, second; Bebe Huxtable, third; Myrna Ikenberry, fourth; and Donna Riehm, fifth.

The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club’s game on April 30 was directed by Chris Lane. The North-South players were led by Klee Zaricky and Betty Collier, with Bobby Patton and Eleanor Patton placing second. Lester Dalton and Mary Fenlon were third in A, and Ann Thompson and Jolene Andersen placed second in C.

The East-West players were led by Virginia Seaver and Chuck Hedges, with Catherine Blumenfeld and Grant Sutton placing second. Yvonne Hedges and Sally Taylor were third in A, and Mona Bell and Nita Scales placed second in C.

The Thursday Morning Mentor Club’s game on May 1 used the Howell movement and was directed by Chris Lane. Virginia Seaver and Angie Davidson placed first and Jack Flickinger and Chris Lane were second. Wanna Roszel and Arkie Vaughn placed third. Julia Brooks and Earle Core were fourth.

The Friday Afternoon Bridge Club’s game on May 2 was directed by Virginia Seaver. The North-South players were led by Lester Dalton and Mary Fenlon. Clarice Broz and Marilyn Martin were second. Dianne Childs and Judy Hildreth placed third, and Harry Shaffer and Lynn Hui were fourth.

The East-West players were led by Harry Talley and Don Daugherty, with David Piro and Paul Heitzman placing second. Virginia Seaver and Sally Taylor were third in A, and Nita Scales and Carol Ball placed fourth.

The Sunday Afternoon Bridge Club’s game on May 1 was directed by Chris Lane. Virginia Seaver and Craig Huneke placed first, and Pat Lechtenberg and Chris Lane were second. Jean Khatib and Grant Sutton placed third. Adelaide Hanna and Shari Krentzel were fourth.

The Monday Evening Bridge Club’s game on May 5 was directed by Virginia Seaver. The North-South players were led by Donna Johnson and Paul Heitzman. Kent McCullough and Larry Bodle placed second, and Virginia Seaver and Lois Jones were third. Harry Shaffer and Jambo Zhang placed fourth place in A. Dorothy Netson and Barbara Merriam were first in B, with Clyde Romer and Steven Phelps placing second in B.

The East-West players were led by David Piro and Brian Barrett. Craig Huneke and Jeremy Martin placed second and David Leitch and Steve Vossler were third in A. Lois Clark, and Shirley Reese placed fourth in A.

The Knights of Columbus 107th annual Kansas State Convention was on May 3-5 in Hays. Several local knights were honored.

Families of the year: Paul and Pamela Clark of Council 1372, St. John; Bernie and Debra Antes of Council 12960, Corpus Christi and also of District 18, Lawrence and Eudora.

Knights of the year: Gerald Denning of Council 1372; Bernie Antes of Council 12960 and District 18.

Other Council 1372 awards: Leo Krones, 50-year membership; and the council received a plaque for the highest pro-life donations in Division 9, for membership between 193-289. The division averaged $32.12 per member.

The 2009 Kansas State Convention will be on May 2-4 in Lawrence.
