Six Jayhawks earn postseason honors from Big 12, five from AP

AP All-Big 12 teams announced

Four Jayhawks landed on the Associated Press’ All-Big 12 teams, but none from the league’s co-regular season champs were on the first team.

“I can see how that could happen with our team, because, if I’m not mistaken, I believe four of our players received first team recognition, but they split the vote,” KU coach Bill Self said at his weekly press conference Monday. “It’s disappointing as a coach because you want your guys to win postseason honors, but I can certainly see how it happened. You look at our team, and who’s the best player on our team just depends on what game you watch. Like right now, Sherron would be the best player on our team based on how he played this past week. Disappointing, (but I’m) not crushed.”

The first team consisted of Kansas State freshman Michael Beasley, Texas sophomore D.J. Augustin, Baylor junior Curtis Jerrells, Oklahoma freshman Blake Griffin and Nebraska senior Aleks Maric.

KU sophomore Darrell Arthur and juniors Mario Chalmers and Brandon Rush kicked things off on the second team, which was rounded out by Texas junior A.J. Abrams and Oklahoma State junior Byron Eaton.

The third team included K-State freshman Bill Walker, Texas sophomore Damion James, Colorado senior Richard Roby, Baylor junior Kevin Rogers and Kansas senior Darnell Jackson.

Earning honorable mention was KU sophomore Sherron Collins, along with Texas Tech senior Martin Zeno, Colorado senior Marcus Hall, Missouri junior DeMarre Carroll and Texas A&M senior Joseph Jones.

Big 12 honors handed out

The Big 12 released its individual awards and all-league teams Monday, with several Kansas University players drawing mention.

Sophomore forward Darrell Arthur and junior guard Brandon Rush landed on the six-member first team alongside K-State’s Michael Beasley, Baylor’s Curtis Jerrells, Texas’ D.J. Augustin and Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin.

Junior guard Mario Chalmers landed on the second team with Nebraska’s Aleks Maric, Texas’ duo of Damion James and A.J. Abrams and Texas Tech’s Martin Zeno.

Senior forward Darnell Jackson was honored with a spot on the league’s third team, joining Colorado’s Richard Roby, Iowa State’s Jiri Hubalek, K-State’s Bill Walker and Oklahoma State’s Byron Eaton.

Chalmers and senior guard Russell Robinson were also placed on the league’s all-defensive team. Griffin, Iowa State’s Rahshon Clark, Oklahoma State’s Marcus Dove and Texas’ Justin Mason were also given those honors.

The lone individual honor drawn by a KU player was the sixth man award, given to sophomore guard Sherron Collins. Beasley was named the league’s Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, with Texas’ Rick Barnes garnering Coach of the Year honors. Dove was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year and Missouri’s DeMarre Carroll its Newcomer of the Year.
