Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 3, 1908: “Directors and senior members of the YMCA will handle season tickets for the Douglas County Chautauqua program with Willis Folks as head of the committee. : In June of 1909, the Old Order of Dunkards, or German Baptists, will hold their annual national meeting at the Levi Flory farm in Willow Springs Township. The number of church members here may exceed 2,000. Every church of the denomination in the nation is due to be represented. : The annual commencement number of the Lawrence High School Budget is now in local book stalls and it consists of a record 56 pages and seven cuts. It is quite popular. : Cloudbursts and heavy rains over the entire territory are due to make the Kaw River swell greatly here later today but there does not appear to be any danger of flooding. The area got two to four inches of rain last night and more is due tonight.”
