Allison helps Bears slip past Texas State

Texas, Colorado pick up victories

? Rachel Allison helped Baylor ride out a bumpy first half before taking control.

She had 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead No. 9 Baylor to an 84-57 victory over Texas State on Friday night.

The teams combined for 26 fouls and 18 turnovers in the first half, and Texas State was called for three fouls before scoring a point.

“It was hard to get into a rhythm,” Texas State coach Suzanne Fox said. “We like to play up and down, and with the fouls and both teams going to the free throw line, it made both teams choppy.”

Angela Tisdale added 19 points, Jessica Morrow 12 and Jhasmin Player 11 for Baylor (12-1).

Victoria Davis and Tamarra Evans-Sluga each scored 13 for Texas State (6-7), and Joyce Ekworomadu had 10 points.

“We couldn’t get into the flow of the game,” Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. “We would foul, they would foul. They would take charges. When you shoot that many free throws, you know there’s a lot of stopping going on in the game.”

Late in the first half, Tisdale converted a three-point play and made two more free throws, and Morrow hit a three-pointer to stretch Baylor’s two-point lead into a 35-25 advantage with 3:10 left.

Baylor led 39-31 at the half, but Allison scored six points during a 10-2 run to open the second half and gave the Bears a 51-33 lead with 15:56 remaining.

During the final 6:40, she made two free throws and a three-pointer off an inbounds play to spur a 16-2 run to close out the game.
