The state is postponing plans to increase the speed limit on U.S. Highway 56, citing safety concerns.

The Kansas Department of Transportation made the announcement in a press release Tuesday, saying a recent traffic study had persuaded officials to delay a planned increase from 55 mph to 60 mph along the highway’s route through Douglas, Johnson, Osage and Lyon counties.

“KDOT staff plan to conduct meetings with local community, county and school district officials located along U.S. 56 in the four-county area to address safety concerns for schools that may be impacted by the increased speed limit,” the agency said in the release.

There was no timeline given for the discussions; the agency said no increase in speed would be forthcoming “until all discussions are completed.”
