Hinrich out, Collison in for U.S. team

Former Jayhawk pulls out of crowded point-guard competition

Citing personal reasons, former Kansas University guard Kirk Hinrich withdrew from U.S. men’s senior national team basketball training camp on Monday, the day ex-Jayhawk Nick Collison was added to the squad.

Hinrich of the Chicago Bulls joined Greg Oden and Shane Battier in pulling out of camp, removing what may have been one of the toughest roster decisions the team would have faced.

Hinrich, who is not injured, was married last month and reportedly saw the writing on the wall with the Olympic committee bringing in Jason Kidd, Chauncey Billups and Deron Williams to vie for the three point guard slots for the U.S. team to compete at the Olympic qualifying tournament.

Hinrich played just 13 minutes last month in the intrasquad scrimmage to close U.S. minicamp. He played in all nine games for the Americans last year in the world championships, starting three of them.

Oden recently had his tonsils removed, while Battier cited a family matter.

In all, 16 players report to Las Vegas for training camp Wednesday. The roster must be trimmed to 12 the day before the FIBA Americas tournament begins on Aug. 22.

Collison, who averaged 9.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game for Seattle last season, has been tagged “Mr. USA Basketball” because of his play on eight USA Basketball teams.

Collison was involved with a USA team every summer between the summer before his senior year in high school in 1998 through 2003. His last appearance came in 2003, when he helped lead the USA to a 10-0 record, the gold medal and a qualifying berth for the 2004 Olympics at the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“We are adding another ‘big’ in Nick Collison, and he’ll participate in the August training. Nick was not available for the July 20-22 training because he was getting married. We’re excited about his addition, he has had a lot of USA Basketball experience. He’s physical, he handles the pick and roll as well as anyone, he’s been added to the Senior National Team for a reason,” said senior national team managing director Jerry Colangelo.

Others at camp: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant, Tyson Chandler, Kevin Durant, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Mike Miller, Tayshaun Prince, Michael Redd, J.J. Redick, Amare Stoudemire and Deron Williams.

The Americans will train from Aug. 15-20 at a Las Vegas high school, scrimmaging against a select team of young NBA players. They face Venezuela in the opener of the 10-nation regional qualifying tournament, needing to finish in the top two to clinch a spot in the 2008 Olympics.
