3 killed when train hits car at rural crossing

? Three people died when a train hit their car at a rural crossing in Seward County, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The accident Wednesday afternoon killed the driver, Martha Mendoza, 37, and passengers Estela Aceves, 54, and Brenda Ruvaltab, 4. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

All three were from Garden City, and the patrol said Aceves was the girl’s grandmother.

The patrol said Aceves’ car was struck after she ran a stop sign at the crossing, which has lights but no crossing arms.

Trooper Justin Wallace said the train’s engineer sounded his horn before the collision, and it was working properly.
