T operating changes up for approval

Bottom line

City commissioners will be asked to approve a change in how the Lawrence Transit System operates. The change would require T users to go to a designated bus stop to board a bus. Currently, users can flag down a bus anywhere along a route.

Background

Transit leaders say the change will make the system more efficient by eliminating many stop-and-go rides. During a previous public comment period, people did express concern that some people with disabilities may not be able to easily walk to a bus stop, which could be up to a quarter mile away.

Transit system leaders are recommending that disabled T riders could register with the city to receive a special placard they could wave to flag down a bus anywhere along routes.
