June gets off to warm start

Sunny skies expect this afternoon

Leave your umbrella at home. But grab some sunglasses on the way out.

“We will keep it dry today,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “We have some scattered clouds to start today, with more sunshine this afternoon.”

Today’s high temperature will climb to 84 degrees, she said. The average high temperature for this date is 82 degrees. The record high was 101 degrees, set in 1934.

At 7:15 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 66 degrees, the humidity was 93 percent and winds were out of the north at 3 mph.

The morning low was 63 degrees. The average low temperature for this date is 61 degrees. The record low was 46 degrees, set in 1982.

Lawrence ended May with 4.18 inches of rain measured at the airport, which was about 1.12 inches below average for the month, Schack said.

Lawrence has had 12.43 inches of precipitation so far this year, which is about 1.59 inches below the average of 14.02 through May. May had 4.09 inches of rain.

Although Schack said Lawrence will stay dry today, the National Weather Service says there is a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Overnight, Lawrence’s temperature will fall to 57 degrees, she said.

“It looks like a fantastic Friday,” Schack said. Mostly sunny conditions are expected Friday, with the high reaching 86 degrees, she said.

Saturday’s morning low will be 59 degrees, climbing to a high of 89 degrees by Saturday afternoon, with mostly sunny skies.
