Power outage blamed on theft of copper wire

? With temperatures reaching 103, more than 2,600 homes and businesses in North Topeka were without power Thursday afternoon after someone stole copper wire out of utility equipment, police said.

Westar Energy was able to restore power to the affected areas within two hours, and police said they found some of the stolen copper at a scrap yard. Authorities are still looking for leads on who was responsible for the thefts.

“The person or people who did this are lucky that they didn’t hurt themselves or worse, not to mention that they cut power to thousands of customers in temperatures of 100-plus degrees,” said Westar spokeswoman Karla Olsen.
