Padres’ stopper struggles

? Bobby Abreu hit a two-run double in the ninth inning off a suddenly shaky Trevor Hoffman, and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied past the San Diego Padres, 5-4, Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Hoffman has two blown saves in his last three chances, plus one in the All-Star game last week.

Padres manager Bruce Bochy came out to get the relief ace after he allowed Abreu’s hit to right-center with none out – Hoffman’s third blown save in 28 chances. Bochy also pulled Hoffman (0-2) Friday night after he blew the save in a game the Atlanta Braves won 15-12 in 11 innings.

Giants 7, Brewers 6

San Francisco – Ray Durham hit a two-run single off closer Derrick Turnbow’s glove in the ninth inning to help the Giants.

Durham also hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Rookie Eliezer Alfonzo hit a solo homer in the eighth for San Francisco, and Barry Bonds’ pinch-hit single in the ninth started the rally.

Marlins 1, Nationals 0

Miami – Rookie Anibal Sanchez allowed one hit in seven innings, and Cody Ross homered for the Marlins.

Pirates 6, Rockies 5

Pittsburgh – Joe Randa drove in three runs, and the Pirates beat the Rockies to capture their second consecutive series for only the second time this season.

Randa, who began the season as the Pirates’ starting third baseman but lost his job after going on the disabled list, went 2-for-4 and has hit .500 (11-for-22) with nine RBIs in his last five starts.

Astros 4, Cubs 2

Chicago – Roger Clemens outpitched Greg Maddux in a rare matchup of 300-game winners to help Houston beat the Cubs.

Todd Walker hit a two-run homer for the Cubs.

Brad Lidge pitched the ninth for his 22nd save in 26 chances.

Reds 7, Mets 4

Cincinnati – Jason LaRue’s two-run double in the eighth inning sparked the Reds.

The Reds rallied from a 4-0 deficit, tying it on Rich Aurilia’s solo homer in the fifth. Scott Hatteberg started the winning rally with his third hit of the game, a leadoff single in the eighth off Duaner Sanchez (5-1).

Diamondbacks 8, Dodgers 0

Phoenix – Miguel Batista pitched a six-hitter, and Stephen Drew had three hits for the Diamondbacks.

Batista (9-5) struck out two and walked two in his third complete game of the season.

Cardinals 8, Braves 3

St. Louis – Chris Carpenter shut down a surging Atlanta Braves offense, and Jim Edmonds hit a three-run homer, leading St. Louis.

The Cardinals rebounded from a pair of lopsided defeats.
