Cleveland routs New York, 19-1

? Victor Martinez went 5-for-6 and Jhonny Peralta and Travis Hafner each hit two of Cleveland’s six home runs, powering the Indians to a 19-1 rout of New York on Tuesday night to spoil Yankees owner George Steinbrenner’s 76th birthday.

The win was Cleveland’s largest at home in more than 56 years, since a 21-2 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics on June 18, 1950.

Martinez and Peralta connected for two-run homers in the first inning off Shawn Chacon (4-3) for the suddenly streaking Indians, who scored nine times in the fifth inning and have won four straight for the first time since May 16-19.

Cleveland’s Fourth of July display of firepower backed Jake Westbrook (7-4), who didn’t allow an earned run in seven solid innings.

Angels 14, Mariners 6

Seattle – Juan Rivera homered twice in the rout. Rivera homered leading off the fifth and then hit a three-run shot in the ninth. It was Rivera’s fourth multihomer game and he finished with five RBIs.

White Sox 13, Orioles 0

Chicago – Jose Contreras won his 17th straight decision and Juan Uribe hit a three-run homer and drove in five runs.

Athletics 2, Tigers 1, 10 inn.

Oakland, Calif. – Jay Payton lined a single to right with two outs in the 10th inning to score Bobby Crosby with the winning run. Fernando Rodney (4-3) walked Crosby with one out, struck out Eric Chavez and then walked Frank Thomas to bring up Payton, who also drove in a run. Oakland starter Dan Haren allowed four hits and one run in seven innings.

Devil Rays 9, Red Sox 6

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Tampa Bay’s Ty Wigginton homered for the third time in two games, connecting off Curt Schilling to snap a seventh-inning tie. Julio Lugo and Jonny Gomes also homered for Tampa Bay. Boston’s David Ortiz hit his 27th homer in the seventh.

Blue Jays 3, Rangers 2

Arlington, Texas – Roy Halladay pitched 72â3 scoreless innings and Russ Adams and Eric Hinske homered as Toronto hung on for their fourth win in 19 meetings with Texas. Halladay (11-2) scattered six hits.
