Jacob Esau, Lawrence, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. To be named to the list, students must earn at least a 3.3 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Esau is studying computer engineering at Rose-Hulman, a private engineering, mathematics and science college in Terre Haute, Ind.

Betty Friedel, Jackie Steelman and Cheri Underwood, all of the Ottawa school district, attended a workshop on meeting the needs of students in poverty recently at Emporia State University.

The Dec. 8 workshop, called “What, Why and How: Cognitive Strategies That Help Students from Poverty Learn,” was organized by the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence at Emporia State. The workshop was attended by 60 educators from across the state.

Marvin L. Hunt and Lynne Ann Pryor, both of Lawrence, received doctor of philosophy degrees Dec. 16 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

Erin Schmidt, Ottawa, is among 10 Emporia State University students competing for Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships, which provide financial assistance to outstanding student performers. Some awards will be presented at the Region V gathering of the Kennedy Center American College Festival, set for Jan. 21-27 in Ames, Iowa.

Several area residents were candidates to receive degrees at Emporia State University’s fall commencement on Dec. 16.

Several area students were candidates for graduation during Pittsburg State University’s winter commencement on Dec. 15.

Students who received bachelor’s degrees include Joseph Todd Manson and Douglas Scott Wittebort, both of De Soto; Kristin M. Messer, Baldwin City; James Allen Blades and Bree Ann Knight, both of Eudora; Karen Owetha Mayse, Lawrence; Joanna C. Mills, Ottawa; Sarah Subelka and Cynthia M. Worden, both of Tonganoxie; and Kory E. Casselman, Wellsville.

Students who received master’s degrees include Jennifer M. Gorup and Gerald L. Thomason, both of Lawrence.

Sun-young Ju, a Kansas University doctoral candidate in piano performance, received first prize in the Hays Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition on Nov. 12 at Fort Hays State University.

Ju, who studies under Jack Winerock, won with her performance of the Second Concerto of Franz Liszt. As part of her award, she received $500.

Ju was born in Seoul, South Korea. She received her bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul and her master’s degree in piano performance from KU in 2006. She is the winner of the Neihart Scholarship of the Kansas City Musical Club.

Oskaloosa High School announces its Students of the Month for November: Jordan Barbo and Beth Bellinger, seniors; and Colby Artman, Jayme Barnes and Lutz Chrobok, all juniors. The students are chosen based on their positive contributions to the school and community.

Several area residents graduated from the Kansas University Public Management Center’s Certified Public Managers program during a Dec. 8 ceremony at the Maner Conference Center in Topeka.

The graduates and their places of employment include Cheryl L. Wright, Douglas County District Attorney’s Office; Rhonda Banks, Douglas County; Kenneth Lee Massey, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office; and Keith R. Dabney, Douglas County Zoning and Codes. All are Lawrence residents.

The program provides a foundation of knowledge and skills in management practices, offers opportunities for professional and personal growth, and fosters effective management practices in government organizations.
