Braves’ Jones rips 47th

? Giving up a solo shot to Andruw Jones is one thing. He is, after all, a leading MVP candidate who tied a Braves record with his 47th homer.

Giving up a three-run drive on a 2-0 pitch to Atlanta’s No. 8 hitter, rookie Brian McCann, is quite another, even if he knew what to look for.

Washington’s Livan Hernandez allowed both of those big hits, which were plenty to propel the Braves to a 4-0 victory over the Nationals on Saturday behind eight shutout innings from Jorge Sosa and one homer-robbing catch by Jeff Francoeur.

Cardinals 4, Mets 2

St. Louis – Jeff Suppan won his 14th game and hit his first career home run to lead St. Louis past New York.

Mike Piazza hoped to revive the Mets by returning to the lineup for the first time since he broke a bone in his left hand on Aug. 16. He homered in his first at-bat, putting New York ahead 1-0 in the second inning.

But in the eighth inning, the 12-time All-Star was beaned by reliever Julian Tavarez. Piazza sustained a slight concussion.

Marlins 7, Phillies 6

Philadelphia – Pinch-hitter Paul Lo Duca’s two-run single in the seventh inning helped Florida defeat Philadelphia.

Astros 7, Brewers 5

Milwaukee – Andy Pettitte won his fifth straight start and became a 15-game winner for the seventh time, leading Houston over Milwaukee.

Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 5

Denver – Troy Glaus hit his 32nd homer and drove in two runs, and Shawn Green had three hits and a home run.

Reds 6, Pirates 2

Cincinnati – Rich Aurilia’s bases-loaded double in the fourth inning sparked a five-run rally.

Dodgers 3, Padres 1

Los Angeles – Derek Lowe took a shutout into the eighth inning, Willy Aybar had two hits in his first major-league start, and Los Angeles beat San Diego.

Cubs 5, Giants 2

San Francisco – Henry Blanco hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the sixth inning to bail out Chicago starter Mark Prior.
