Lawrence chilled by strong winds, rain and snow

Wind gusts of up to 45 mph expected through 9 p.m.

Like an angry polar bear, an arctic cold front was lumbering into the Lawrence area today, bringing in a mix of blustery winds, rain and even the first snow of the season.

“We are going to experience every fathom of weather,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist.

The cold front moved in about 9 a.m. and Lawrence got some heavy wet flakes of snow about 10 a.m. Wet fluffy flakes were falling on Kansas University’s campus for about 15 minutes at that time. But the snow stopped and has been replaced by intermittent rain through the early afternoon.

At 2:30 p.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 38 degrees, the humidity was 76 percent and winds were from the northwest at 24 mph, gusting up to 36 mph and making the wind chill 27 degrees.

The National Weather Service has extended its wind advisory for the Lawrence area through 9 p.m., forecasting northwest winds increasing to around 30 mph today, with gusts of 40 to 45 mph.

Temperatures are expected to drop through the day into the low 30s, with skies eventually starting to clear out tonight as the winds die down.

“Tonight, grab the electric blanket. It’s going to be chilly,” Reith said.

By Wednesday morning, the low temperature will start out at 22 degrees, reaching a high of 38 degrees by Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday will start out at 19 degrees, with the temperature climbing to 47 degrees by Thursday afternoon.
