Abdul-Jabbar: Ignore trash talking on court

? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has advice for players facing trash-talking opponents: Ignore them.

“The whole idea of responding to someone trying to use that tactic of intimidation is a waste of time, and it’s going to deflect them from what they want to do on court,” the NBA’s career leading scorer said.

Abdul-Jabbar is in Shanghai to lead a course exploring cultural differences between American and Asian basketball players – including the use of strong language to intimidate opponents.

“They’re going to have to deal with it. People are going to try to intimidate them,” he said.

Abdul-Jabbar’s course, “Basketball Psychology and attitude,” aims to cover real-life situations that athletes from China and other nations might not have experienced, including talking trash and dealing with the media.

The two-day course is part of the 2004 adidas Superstar Camp that will pick an all-star team from among 55 junior players from China and six other nations and regions.
