Injury accident

A two-car collision Sunday afternoon on U.S. Highway 59 sent five people to hospitals, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. One victim was taken to University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kan., and the others to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

The accident was reported about 1:20 p.m. on the highway a mile south of the junction with U.S. Highway 56, or about 10 miles south of Lawrence. A 1998 Toyota, which was southbound on Highway 59 struck the back of a 1984 Chrysler that was preparing to turn off of the highway onto North 200 Road, the Patrol report said. The Toyota ended up in a ditch and the Chrysler came to a stop on its side facing west in the northbound lane, the report showed.

Michelle L. Schulz, 25, Ottawa, driver of the Toyota, was taken to KU Hospital, the report said. Hospital officials said Sunday night they couldn’t confirm or deny she was a patient.

The other victims in the Toyota were taken to LMH and were identified as Coleen J. Rector, 47, David C. Rector, 47 and Matthew Schulz, 5, all of Ottawa. Coleen Rector was admitted to the hospital and was in good condition Sunday night, a nursing supervisor said. The others were treated and released.

The driver of the Chrysler, Sandra S. Merrifield, 51, Baldwin, also was taken to LMH. She, too, was treated and released.
