Raiders roll over Topeka Post One, 15-2

Lawrence youth baseball team atones for no-hit loss in last outing

There’s no doubt that when the Lawrence Raiders showed up at the Olathe District Activities Center Tuesday for a doubleheader with Olathe South, they were more than ready to hit.

But the Falcons were a no-show in their own back yard, having gone to play elsewhere and leaving the Raiders – still smarting from Sunday’s no-hit loss – with two forfeit victories.

Poor Topeka Post One.

The Topekans felt the wrath as the Raiders rolled to a 15-2 run-ruling Wednesday night at Free State High in seven innings.

“We kind of got our timing back coming back from the wood bats, and I was proud of the way we hit the ball,” Raiders coach Kevin Tucker said. “We kind of got in a rhythm in the first and in the fourth put up some crooked numbers.”

Topeka’s wild pitching staff helped Lawrence in that regard.

The Raiders took advantage from the jump; their first three batters drew walks. That set the stage for third baseman Cory Cooper, who has been swinging a hot bat, as he jolted a triple that trickled to the left-field wall and made it 3-0 early.

After the Raider bats cooled for a couple of innings, Cooper was back at it in that wild fourth inning, when he started the scoring with an RBI double. After three Raider batters were hit by pitches, Brian Heere, in his second at-bat of the frame, took an outside offering deep into right field. The ball landed on the warning track, put Heere on second and made it 13-2.

Heere went 3-for-5 on the night with two RBIs, four runs scored and three stolen bases.

“I was kind of in a slump with the wood bats,” Heere said of his struggles on Saturday and Sunday in the Al Ice Memorial Woodbat Classic. “I kind of got out of it tonight.”

The Raiders’ 15 runs came off just 10 hits, but their patience at the plate provided a nice bounce-back from Sunday and should have them ready for more top competition this weekend in Bartlesville, Okla.

“The ball was popping off the bat a lot better,” first baseman Lorenzo Ricketts said of the aluminum reunion. “It’s great to end like that going into a big tournament this weekend.”
