Garden City

Six die after car crashes into truck

Two adults and four children were killed Tuesday when the car they were traveling in slammed into a truck.

A dispatcher at the Kansas Highway Patrol said the accident occurred sometime after 1 p.m. in Garden City.

Authorities said the six victims were traveling in a Chevrolet Lumina that apparently ran a stop sign and was hit by a semi-trailer truck.

The truck’s driver was taken to the hospital, but there was no immediate word on his condition.

An investigation into the crash was still under way Tuesday evening. The identities of the victims had not been released.

Abilene

Smoking ban approved

The Abilene city commission has voted to adopt an ordinance that prohibits smoking in most enclosed public buildings, workplaces and businesses.

The main exceptions to the ban will be bars, motel rooms designated for smoking guests, retail tobacco stores and bowling alleys. The ordinance will take effect in 60 days.

The commission had heard strong opposition to the proposal before it voted 5-0 Monday to enact the ban.

The ordinance also allows restaurants to designate outdoor seating as smoking areas if they aren’t close to the entrance. If food sales are less than 45 percent of a business’ revenue, it is considered a bar and is exempt from the ordinance; otherwise, it’s a restaurant and is subject to the ban.
