Cyclones win with little rotation

? Iowa State doubled up on Iowa in a big way.

Led by Lyndsey Medders’ 20 points and 14 assists, Iowa State had four players record double-doubles in a 77-61 victory over Iowa on Thursday night.

Freshman Nicky Wieben added 19 points and 12 rebounds, Megan Ronhovde had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Brittany Wilkins grabbed 13 rebounds to go with 10 points.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever coached a game of this magnitude and at this level where four kids get double-doubles,” Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said.

“That’s unheard of in my mind,” Medders added.

Iowa State’s fifth starter, Heather Ezell, scored 12 points. Fennelly used only one other player, Lisa Bildeaux.

“Their five beat our team,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said.

Crystal Smith and Tiffany Reedy led Iowa with 13 points each, while Krista VandeVenter had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Smith, averaging 21.9 points, had trouble getting to the basket against Iowa State’s 2-3 zone and made just six of 19 shots. She went 1-for-9 on three-pointers.

Texas Guard Coco Reed, right, and Stephen F. Austin guard Britany Vinson fight for a loose ball Thursday night at Ervin Center. Texas won, 77-56.

“I really didn’t look to penetrate enough,” Smith said. “Even when I knew my three-pointer wasn’t going in, I just wasn’t looking for it enough.”

Iowa State’s lack of depth resulted in every starter playing at least 35 minutes. Medders played the entire game, while Ronhovde sat out for one minute.

Medders credited the fans who ventured out on snow-covered roads for pulling her through the game. The attendance was listed at 10,422.

“Having them there, it kinda was like, are you going to give up now and pout about the fact that my back feels like I’m 80 years old or I’m going to get in that second gear and go,” said Medders, who paused before adding:

“I’m exhausted. I’m ready for bed.”

Iowa (4-4) missed 15 of its last 18 shots in the opening half and finished at 35.4 percent for the game.

“Unfortunately we didn’t play the game at 2 o’clock when we got off the bus because we were shooting the lights out in shootaround,” Bluder said.

Iowa threatened once in the second half after Ezell’s layup gave Iowa State a 51-33 lead. The Cyclones made only one basket over the next six minutes and the Hawkeyes went on a 15-3 run, drawing to 54-48 on consecutive 3-pointers by Smith and Kristi Smith.

At that point, the momentum was swinging Iowa’s way.

“We could feel it,” Medders said. “But basketball’s a game of runs and it was our time to get on one.”

The Cyclones did exactly that. Wieben hit a turnaround shot and Iowa State scored 15 of the next 19 points to put it away.

No. 19 Texas 77, Stephen F. Austin 56

Austin – Tiffany Jackson scored 19 points and Ashley Lindsey had 12 points and 13 rebounds in her first career start, leading Texas over Stephen F. Austin.

Lindsey, a 6-foot-4 freshman, also blocked six shots to help the Longhorns (4-3) end a two-game losing streak. Erika Arriaran added 14 points for Texas.

Britany Vinson scored 15 points, including three three-pointers, to lead Stephen F. Austin (4-4).

Kirby Killingswroth and LaToya Mills each added 11 points.

Stephen F. Austin shot 11 percent (4-for-36) in the first half and 23 percent overall.
