Retired professor, 100, presents $100,000 gift

A retired Kansas University mathematics professor has donated $100,000 toward library studies at the university.

G. Baley Price announced the gift at an event Monday at the Spencer Research Library.

The money will support graduate students interested in archival research or becoming librarians. Recipients will work with staff at the Spencer Research Library to process the library’s materials, especially through digital technologies.

Price, 100, started teaching at KU in 1937 but served in the Air Force Operations Research Section during World War II. He was a pioneer in computer science and helped KU obtain its first computer in 1956.

He continued teaching at KU until 1976, when he retired. He previously donated $500,000 to KU for a humanities professorship honoring his late wife, Cora Lee Beers Price.
