The Lawrence Public Library needs volunteers for the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library’s 2004 Fall Book Sale. The sale, featuring more than 100,000 books, CDs and records, will raise money to help buy special books and equipment, finance literacy events and help special programs. Volunteers will stock books and straighten shelves during the following sale hours:

  • Thursday, Sept. 30, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 1, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 2, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, Oct. 3, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 5 and 7, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Immediate volunteer needs

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department will provide flu vaccines at no charge to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Free State High School. The health department needs volunteers to assist with this Flu-X event in greeting and directing the public, supporting the medical staff with organizing and clerical tasks, and providing other assistance. Volunteers will receive advance training and may sign up for shifts. Flu-X is a federally funded exercise and will test the health department’s mass dispensing plan.   • The Roger Hill Volunteer Center is recruiting individuals and groups to assist with the Kids Voting program on Election Day, Nov. 2. The Lawrence Journal-World in partnership with the volunteer center and Douglas County schools sponsor the event. Kids Voting is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational program to enhance civics education and provide youths a voting experience at official polls on Election Day. Volunteers are needed to help at Kids Voting tables before and after school at polling sites throughout Douglas County. Volunteers will give students their ballots and tally up the votes at the end of each shift. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, contact the volunteer center at 865-5030.
