Falbo Academy Standouts: Several players training at Lawrence’s Falbo Knows Tennis Academy had successful summers. Matt Hansen vaulted over 900 spots in the USTA National Rankings in the Boys 16’s division. Taj Harrison went undefeated at the USTA National Zonal team championships. Trevor Hedburg, playing with Harrison, placed second in doubles in a Select National Level event in St. Louis. And Malcolm Harrison posted four wins in the boys’ 16 National Championships.

Leawood Winners: Dee Boeck of Lawrence, Wally Brawner of Tonganoxie and Paul Heitzman of Eudora were age-group winners in the Labor Day 5K Monday in Leawood. Other Lawrence top-three age-group finishers were Jessica Wiley, Karen Hyde and David Roberts.

Lightning Strikes: Lawrence Lightning won the U-10 Fall Classic Baseball Tournament Monday at Sport 2 Sport. Team members are Matt Baker, Alex Green, Cody Scott, CJ Stuever, Stan Skwarlo, Garrick Clapp, Jacob Caldwell, Adam Rea, Kyle McFarland, Rigby McClure, Drake Hofer and Shane Willoughby. Darren McClure, Kevin Stuever, Joe Caldwell and Mike Willoughby are the coaches.

Roesler Defends: Chad Roesler shot 73-70–143 and defender his Jayhawk Golf Club championship last weekend at Alvamar. Kent Beisner was runner-up at 75-73-148, followed by Mike Grosdidier 76-73–149, Van Reichert 78-76–154 and Lynn Riney 75-83–158 who shared fifth with Bud Stagg 81-77-158. In net scoring, Dean Hilker was low at 70-71–141, followed by Keith Wallace 70-73–143, Andy Devin 71-73–144, Stephen Morgan 75-70–145 and Larry Whiteley 73-74–147.

Athletics Tryout: The Kansas Athletics, a U-11 baseball team, will conduct a tryout at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Municipal Field in Hobbs Park. For information, call Doug Bennett 979-6484 or Dave Eddy 887-6862.

Rebels Champs: Kansas Rebels won the Fall Classic U-12 baseball tournament last weekend at Sport 2 Sport. Team members are Colin Toalson, Clay Hamilton, Troy Willoughby, Ty Hensley, Dylan Perry, Josh Hoffman, Ross Johnson, Shane Pokorny, Jake Johnson, Drew Sorrinick and Austin Clapp. Rod Sharp, Todd Hoffman, Mike Hensley and Aaron Bell are the coaches.

Riley, Goodin Shine: Grinnell College’s Justin Riley, a junior from Lawrence, was named Midwest Conference runner of the week after finishing eighth in the Timmons Invitational last Saturday at Rim Rock Farm. Also, Gabe Goodin, a senior linebacker from Lawrence, led Grinnell with 15 tackles and a forced fumble in Saturday’s 27-24 football victory over Ripon.

Manor Golf Benefit: Entry deadline is Saturday for the Lawrence Presbyterian Manor golf tournament scheduled next Thursday at Eagle Bend. Cash prizes will be awarded in the tourney that benefits the Manor’s Good Samaritan program. For information, call 841-4262.
