University Bridge Club announces the winners of its Aug. 21 game. Hosts were Jean and Don Whitaker, and Wilma and Roy Cropp.

Blue winners were Ed Stellmacher, first; Jean Khotib, second; and Lois Liebert, third.

Pink winners were Marion Lang, first; Wanda Kring, second; and Jean Whitaker, third.

  • The Lawrence Mentor’s Duplicate Bridge Club met Aug. 25. Seven tables of participants competed in a stratified game following a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Playing the North-South cards, Betty Spalsbury, attaining the club master level, and Bob Anderson swept first place in A, B and C. Bill Hamilton and Barb Hamilton claimed second place in A and B. Don Daugherty and Harry Talley were third in A.

Sitting East-West, Bob Huffman and Helen Huffman placed first in A and B. Bobbie McCorkle and Dick Moore took second in A and B and first in C. Gary Joyce and Mary Joyce were third in A and B. Grant Sutton and Amy Miller finished second in C.

  • The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met Aug. 27. Nine and a half tables participated in a stratified game following a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the play.

Playing the North-South cards, Betty Collier and Patt Radford claimed first place in A. Erna Holmes and Frances Vogel placed second. Kent McCullough and Larry Bodle were third. Lois Clark and Harry Shaffer took fourth. Shirley Vaughn and Virginia Eddy finished first in B. Don Daugherty and Harry Talley were second in B and first in C. Amy Miller and Grant Sutton took second in B.

Playing East-West, Virginia Seaver and Jim Gunn took first place in A. Paul Heitzman and Dave Piro were second. Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges were third and first in B. Art Retsema and Phyllis Lustgarten tied for fourth in A, second in B and first in C with the pairs of Carol Ball and Ann Thompson, and Harriet Olson and Don Brennaman.

  • The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge met Monday. Thirteen and a half tables participated in a stratified game that followed a Mitchell movement. Virginia Seaver directed the game.

Sitting North-South, Larry Bodle and Kent McCullough finished first in A. Lois Jones and Jeff Nash placed second. Chuck Hedges and Mary White were third. Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd claimed fourth in A and first in B. Grant Sutton and Amy Miller were fifth in A, second in B and first in C. Lester Dalton and Julia Dalton took sixth in A. Martie Hartman and Pat Burgstahler finished third in B and second in C.

Playing the East-West cards, Lois Clark and Russ LaForce swept first place in A, B and C. Frances Vogel and Alice Leitch placed second in A, B and C. Bob Huffman and Helen Huffman were third in A, B and C. Cathy Blumenfeld and Mike Blumenfeld were fourth in A and B. Sally Taylor and Shirlie Vaughn placed fifth in A. Shirley Reese and Yvonne Hedges took sixth in A.

  • Brook Creek Neighborhood Assn. will have its annual potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Brook Creek Park. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert and eating utensils. Fried chicken and soft drinks will be provided.

The association will have a business meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at the East Lawrence Recreation Center.

  • The Lawrence Kiwanis Club will have a Pancake Day on Sept. 11 in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice will be served from 7 a.m. to noon. The money raised will benefit the Kiwanis Service Fund, which is used for various civic and charitable projects of the organization. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 4-12. Children age 3 and younger will be admitted free.
  • The Knights of Columbus Council 1372 donated 25 bath sets to St. John the Evangelist Christmas in July event. The bath sets along with other donated by parish members were given to the Lawrence Open Shelter. The council also donated 192 pounds of butter to Trinity Interfaith food pantry.
