County to review church site plan
The Worden United Methodist Church congregation may get the green light Wednesday night to apply for building permits and begin construction on a new church.
Douglas County commissioners will review and consider a site plan for the proposed church, which would be about 100 feet from the existing building at 298 E. 900 Road near Baldwin.
The County Commission will meet at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.
Jeff Tully, a planner with the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Department, said he didn’t expect any problems.
“There’s nothing unusual about the plan,” he said.
Site engineer Dwayne McCune, who also is a member of the congregation, said the project already had taken five years.
He said the Worden congregation needed a new church building because of growth.
The proposed church will hold 360 people and a multipurpose space for gatherings.
Originally, the congregation considered adding on to the current church. But it was more cost-effective to start from scratch, McCune said.
“This has been a long process, so it’s pretty exciting just to get the plan to this point,” he said.
