Buhler has campaign finance edge

? State Sen. Mark Buhler, R-Lawrence, has a large advantage in campaign funds over his opponents, Democrat Marci Francisco and Reform Party candidate Jim Mullins, according to disclosure statements filed Monday.

Buhler spent $49,201 between July 23 and last week and had $52,879 on hand to spend in the final week of the campaign, according to a campaign finance report filed with the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office.

Francisco spent $10,253 during the same period, and has $1,760 on hand.

Mullins spent $2,099 and had about $300 for the final days of the campaign.

Buhler’s heavy contributors read like a Who’s Who of political action committees.

He received $8,500 from the Kansas Republican Senatorial Committee and $1,000 each from River Falls Gaming of Dallas, Kansas Realtors, Kansas Farm Bureau and Ashland PAC.

He received $500 each from J.W. Prairie Wind Power, American Family Insurance, Preferred Health Systems, Builders Assn., Kansas Livestock Assn., Kansas Greyhound Assn., Kansas Hospital Assn., Hallmark Global Services, Prairie Band Potawatomi, Alteria, David Hall, Michael Moffet, Kim and Bonnie Wells, and Gary and Amy Nuzum.

Francisco received $1,000 each from the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus and the Senate Democratic Committee.

The Kansas AFL-CIO contributed $700 to Francisco’s campaign, and she received $500 each from the Kansas Sierra Club and Douglas County Democratic Central Committee. She received 54 donations of $50 or less.

Mullins’ major contributor was himself; he loaned his campaign $1,000 and received $500 from Robert Hodgdon of Shawnee.
